| Not a specific war, but war in general and why it's so common in history.
I've thought about why there's war. Why one species would intentionally attack and kill off other members of its species. To see this, I look at the rest of the animal kingdom.
It comes down to space and resources.
When a tomcat invades another's territory there's usually a standoff. Why did the one tomcat invade anyway? He was probably looking for some resources. Resources for animals are food, shelter, and mates.
Perhaps the territory he wondered into had those resources. If he wants them, there'll be a fight. Whoever wins is the dominant one and gets the resources.
And this can be applied to humans as well, can't it?
Empires want more places for their resources. But as humans, we have many other resources we'd like to have. Fuel, metals, better tasting food and goods. People, for breeding or working.
Sometimes I see how war can be necessary. If it's for the basic needs, and they're needed to support the nation. Food, shelter, reproduction.
Other times, I cannot see it justified. Racism, religion, etc. But perhaps if you look at things deeper you'll see something else.
Just made me think... Another thing that's been in my head lately. If other animals don't do it, why do we?

| Pretty sure science has proven that "animals don't have wars/conflicts over resources" thing total bullshit and the only people who say it are high.

| Essentially all of this "animals don't have war" thing is indicative of a messed up kind of self-loathing misanthropy. I mean, it goes so far beyond normal, healty self-loathing and neurosis that it's in a different ballpark.
Where I'm heading with this is that the only procedure that I feel can reliably fix this and instill a proper sense of self-preservation and get one back in touch with the so called 'reptilian' complex of the brain is intensive shock therapy and near fatal doses of sodium thiopental directly into the spinal fluid. Just like a damn truckload of barbituates right up in there.

Again I have no memory of where I heard this, or if articles exist, but I could swear I've seen articles that involve warring...the fuck is a gaggle of monkeys called (hate monkeys), a tribe or...a pride..or something.
But anyway I could swear I've seen some observation from a naturalist that when they fought over land/food/the shit animals fight over they almost used some level of tactics in doing it.
So yeah, exactly what you said. This 'nature is peace and harmony' crap..stop listening to the transcendentalists. You wanna talk about over-privilaged, whiny motherfuckers? They refined that down to a science.
Thoreau was the first hipster. Walden was a hoax, he was living pretty much down the street from mommy and daddy and would continually go over there for dinner parties with the city fathers and such.

| If Emily Dickinson were alive right now, hol would be posting links to her deviantart for us to laugh at.
Everything Whitman wrote that didn't involve the civil war was horseshit, "When I heard the learn'd astronomer" is, frankly, downright loathsome and offensive in how anti-intellectual it is.
X was going off in some thread about how philosophers are "over-privilaged white kids"? Dude never ever read anything the transcendentalists wrote or you will die of an aneurysm, because these motherfuckers are exactly the thing you get so pissed about frequently.

| To be perfectly fair, anti-intellectualism is not a terrible thing... at least not in this climate where intellectualism has somehow become psuedo-intellectualism.

The poem is pretty much this:
"Where do you get off trying to 'understand' the cosmos, being all scientific, instead of just looking maaaan"
It pretty much implies you should just blankly stare at things and if you try to understand them you're killing the beauty or some horseshit.
I'm sure someone will now pop in and go "NAH IT DIDN'T MEAN THAT THE TRANSCENDENTALISTS WERE (etc)". Awful poems, deficient people.
